What Is Self-Drive Boat Rental?
How bareboat hire works, and whether it suits your next day on the water
"Self-drive boat rental" - also called bareboat hire - means you hire the boat itself rather than a boat-and-skipper package. Instead of sitting as a passenger while someone else drives, you're at the helm for the whole trip, setting your own route and pace within the conditions of your hire. Here's how it works and what it takes to get on the water this way.
Self-Drive vs Skippered Charter
A skippered charter includes a professional driver - you book a trip, show up, and enjoy the ride as a passenger. It suits people who want zero responsibility for operating the boat, or who don't hold a boat licence.
Self-drive hire flips that: you're the operator. It typically costs less than a skippered charter, since you're not paying for a skipper's time, and it gives you the freedom to choose your own stops, pace and route rather than following someone else's plan. The trade-off is that it requires a valid boat licence and a bit more hands-on involvement in planning your day.
What a Typical Hire Day Looks Like
1. Collect the Boat
Pick up the Quintrex 430 and trailer from our Marsden base, ready to tow with a mid-size SUV.
2. Safety Briefing
A full run-through of the controls and safety gear before you launch, whatever your experience level.
3. Tow to Your Ramp
Head to your chosen launch point - Moreton Bay, the Brisbane River, Redcliffe, or further afield.
4. You're the Captain
Launch and drive yourself for the day - fishing, cruising, or exploring the islands at your own pace.
What You'll Need
A current Queensland Recreational Boat Licence (RBL), or an accepted interstate or overseas equivalent, is required to drive any vessel with a motor over 4.5kW - which includes our Quintrex 430. If you're not yet licensed, see our guide to getting a Queensland boat licence.
You'll also need a vehicle capable of towing the trailer - any mid-size SUV will do, and we'll show you exactly how to hook up and launch.

Self-Drive Hire FAQs
Common questions before your first self-drive trip
What is self-drive boat rental?
Self-drive boat rental, sometimes called bareboat hire, means you hire the boat and operate it yourself rather than booking a skipper. You're free to set your own route and pace, provided you hold the required licence.
How is self-drive different from a skippered charter?
A skippered charter includes a professional driver, so you're a passenger for the whole trip. Self-drive hire gives you full control of the boat yourself, and is typically less expensive since you're not paying for a skipper's time.
Do I need experience to hire self-drive?
You need a valid Queensland Recreational Boat Licence, which covers the basics through the BoatSafe course. We also run a full safety briefing before every hire, so first-timers with a licence are well supported.
What does a typical self-drive hire day look like?
You collect the boat and trailer from Marsden, tow it to your chosen ramp, get a safety briefing and hands-on run-through, then launch and drive yourself for the day before returning the boat at the end of your hire.
