Getting to Peel Island

Peel Island sits inside Moreton Bay's Marine Park, tucked between the mainland and Coochiemudlo Island, which keeps the water around it calm most days - a comfortable trip for a small self-drive boat like our Quintrex 430 Fishabout.

The island is uninhabited today, but the ruins of the old lazaret (a former quarantine and leprosarium settlement) are still visible from the water and worth a slow cruise past. Most visitors anchor off one of the sandy bays on the western side for swimming, snorkelling or a picnic.

What to Do at Peel Island

Swimming & Snorkelling

Clear, calm water around the western bays makes Peel Island one of the better swimming stops in the bay.

Lazaret Ruins

The historic quarantine station ruins are visible from the water and add some history to the trip.

Anchoring

Sandy bottom and sheltered bays make for easy, secure anchoring in most conditions.

Fishing

The channels around the island hold whiting and bream on the making tide.

Boating Conditions

Peel Island is one of the more sheltered destinations in Moreton Bay, well suited to the Quintrex 430 in typical conditions. As with any trip, check the wind and tide forecast before you leave the ramp. A current Queensland Recreational Boat Licence (RBL) is required to operate the Quintrex 430, and every hire includes a full safety briefing, life jackets, EPIRB, GPS and Fishfinder.

Peel Island FAQs

What you need to know before you head out

How far is Peel Island from the boat ramp? +

It's roughly a 30-40 minute run from Victoria Point or Redland Bay, making it one of the closer island destinations in Moreton Bay.

Is Peel Island suitable for a small boat like the Quintrex 430? +

Yes. The surrounding water is generally sheltered, which makes it a comfortable trip for a 4.3m self-drive boat in normal conditions.

Can I go ashore on Peel Island? +

Yes, you can land on the beaches by dinghy or in shallow water, but the lazaret ruins themselves are heritage-listed and should only be viewed from a respectful distance.

What's the best time to visit? +

A rising tide gives the easiest access to the anchorage bays and better fishing around the edges of the flats.
